This Sharp-shinned hawk thinks the bird feeder is a good place to find lunch.

Moonlight

December 3, 2011
Last night, the moon drew me outside. It was a fine night.

This is a cropped section of an image that was taken hand held.

First Snow: Nov 30

The first snowfall of the season - the flakes may have landed, but they disappeared very quickly.

In Focus

November 13, 2011

Once I've framed my shot, one of the main challenges for me is getting it focused in a way that captures the image that I want. My camera has an excellent lens, and all kinds of technical wizardry inside, but sometimes I really need to override the automatic focus. This entails taking the camera out of intelligent auto mode and having a really hard think. After fiddling around with the settings as well as the micro-dot that functions as a joy-stick, I have managed to produce this one decent image in full manual mode. I can hear you all cheering, "Finally!"

It helps that the subject is completely static.

Timing

November 13, 2011

As much as anything else, photography is about timing. You can be as much of a technical whizz as you like, but your expertise isn't going to be of much use to you if you've left your camera at home.

These images may not be great photographs, but they demonstrate that there's no substitute for just being there.

This Highland Cattle calf was born earlier that day at High Park Zoo.

Dylan has a lovely smile.

This is one of my favourite images for a birthday card. Have a ball on your Birthday!

A one-in-a-million shot - the one where you find yourself saying, "Please be in focus!"

Even birds have sense of humour, it seems.
